NZTrio in Greytown

October 3, 2018 October 2018, Uncategorized Comments Off on NZTrio in Greytown

The NZTrio will conclude its 2018 touring year with the programme Twine, which they will perform in Greytown on Thursday 8 November, and also in Auckland, New Plymouth and Whitianga.

Each concert this year has presented a fresh dynamic, with an impressive line-up of talented Kiwi guest musicians joining founding member, cellist Ashley Brown. For the Twine concerts, violinist Amalia Hall and pianist Somi Kim will combine with Ashley. He says “It is exciting working with different guest musicians, creating new and exhilarating NZTrio combinations every time”.

NZTrio describes the concert programme as follows: “Audiences will be welcomed in with the brief but intoxicating Mishima by Philip Glass. The Trio will then dive headlong into Schumann’s Piano Trio No 2 in F Major, a work described by the composer as a “friendly work, making an immediate impression on the listeners.”

Rush, a recent work by Aussie composer Matthew Hindson, rolls rhythmically into a smile-laden world of tumbles and twirls, gathering momentum and excitement!

After the interval, the Trio and audience will venture together into uncharted territory with Kiwi Celeste Oram’s brand new commissioned work. As we go to print, it’s not yet complete, but a genuine and fascinating work is anticipated from this supremely talented and innovative artist. … Continue Reading

Old School is Back

We profiled our local butcher Scotty’s Meats in the May Martinborough Star of this year. Scotty was committed to finding a way to go plastic bag free. It was here we introduced the idea of bring a container to ‘fill them up’ in the act of reducing waste, reusing and recycling. This went down a treat with many conscious consumers taking advantage of being able to reduce their waste. The ultimate for Scotty was to be able to wrap meat in brown paper… Well, with patience and perseverance, he has done it!

Pay Scotty a visit and compliment him for bringing back the old school way of buying your meat at the butcher.

Thanks Scotty!

Library news

October 3, 2018 October 2018 Comments Off on Library news

It’s that time again – yes, school holidays.  Sorry we don’t have any activities on in the library these two weeks for the children.  We just don’t have the spare room.  Our back room is packed to the gunnels with boxes, some of which are shelving units for the new children’s library which just need to be put together when we move.  I do need some help though – please come and buy some of the sale books.  There are dozens of them which need to find new homes.  I do not want to have to cart boxes of sale books to the new library.

Every Monday (thanks to Bruce and Chris who close the Village Café on a Monday just so we can sell books!) we cart 33 boxes of withdrawn books out to the courtyard tables and set them up for sale.  It’s a bit of a workout but that can only be a good thing for me.  As you may realise I am a bit of a hoarder but it is time to do a cleanout prior to the big move, which I have been reliably told will take place sometime in November.   … Continue Reading

I wandered lonely as a duck

October 3, 2018 October 2018 Comments Off on I wandered lonely as a duck

BY JOHN ANSELL

I wandered lonely as a duck

Left legless by a rubbish truck,

Or right legless? — it’s been a while,

But I cannot forget a smile,

And I would swear to judge or nun

That that duck wasn’t wearing one.

But neither did the duck complain, … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …
