Early settlers

Thomas Fredrick Evans, saddle, harness and collar maker, also an importer. 

The Evans family came to New Zealand in the ship Adelaide in 1840. Thomas was born at Wellington in June 1852. He was bought up in the saddlery trade learning from his elder brother .

TYhomas Evans established himself  at Waihinga in 1878. Thus before John Martin’s township of Martinborough came into existence. His premises was by the small stream just south of McLeod Lane (now Radium street). 

An 1879 report on Waihinga described it as: ‘ This town has a general store , Post Office, Blacksmith’s shop, bootmaker,  and saddler TF Evans. With may other  shop s and dwellings being built.  … Continue Reading

As JoJo had been sewing masks she used the time to listen to audio books  and found a great way of multi tasking. The Misunderstanding of Glenco  by Alexander McColl Smith ( amongst others} filled in the time spent at her sewing machine. Martinborough Lions news

Lions cancelled their early August meeting in response to the Covid 19 level 2 alert, but decided to proceed with their meeting of 26th August with appropriate precautions in place. This business meeting was well attended with Lions enjoying the opportunity to catch up with each other. 

Lions activity over the past couple of months has included revitalising the Putangirua Stream predator trapping programme, which Lions maintain in support of the Aorangi Restoration Trust. Graeme Thomson has now set up a Geo Positioning programme for all the traps on a Notebook computer that he has donated to the club. This will make it easier for members to find the traps. Max Stevens reported a great catch on checking the line recently, including seven rats, three stoats and three opossums. Max said “there is evidence of increased birdlife now about in the area, which is very satisfying”. … Continue Reading

It’s a personal question I know, but what size is your waist?  It’s odds on that it will be more than 54cm, the size of this corset in our collection.   

It was gifted to the museum by the late Norma Chapman, one of the people who set up the museum back in the late 1970s (and also taught at Martinborough School).     We had no information about this wasp-waisted creation so Winifred Bull volunteered to find out more.  The only clue she had was “WB” written on the back. … Continue Reading
