Following on from the success of Leonie Wilde at the national level, we have two more golfers who have featured well in NZ Golf National Competitions. Congratulations to Felicity Warren for placing 3rd nationally in the Aotearoa Cup and Jill Baker for placing 14th in the Veteran’s Cup.

August has been a busy month at the Martinborough Golf Club. A few Wednesday’s ago was the annual Combined 9 and 18 hole Ladies Day. It’s amazing what a spot of fine weather on a Wednesday does, bringing over forty players to the course. Helping-a-helper Phillip Hawkins has been a volunteer firefighter for the last 15 years and has always been willing to lend a hand in the community, but he’s been stopped in his tracks by a second bout of cancer. As he gets weaker, he needs to use a wheelchair to get around so he asked for a quote for a ramp to be built to be able to get in and out of the house.

It was then other firefighters stepped forward and offered to build the deck and ramp for him. Local builder and volunteer firefighter Dean Di Bona said Phil had always been willing to help others. … Continue Reading

Know-your-town The John Martin Snr story,

John Martin Snr was born in Maghera County Londonderry in 1822. He was one of a family of thirteen Martins who arrive din New Zealand on the good ship ‘Lady Nugent’ in 1841.

John Martin married Marion Baird in 1847, they had ten children: Marion, Arthur, Sarah, John, Jessie, Edward, Albert, William, Elizabeth and Robert. With a partner, James Chapman Smith he had a run’ (farm) between Milton and Evan’s flat in Otago.
