Martinborough Golf Report

February 11, 2019 February 2019, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough Golf Report

Happy new year to you all – hopefully everyone is enjoying/surviving this heatwave…sorry farmers….hooray for the grape growers, hopefully it will be a good vintage!!

The course is looking supreme and is playing better than ever.  Those of us lucky enough to play in this year’s Spark Pro-Am tournament were exceptionally grateful to the hard work of an army of volunteers that had a major clean up on their hands after the gale force winds that ripped through on the Wednesday.  I understand that the chainsaws and leaf blowers were in action by sunrise!  The day was a huge success and most enjoyable, with a fine banquet of food served after prizegiving!  The winning professionals Mark Purser, Luke Kwon and Ryan Chisnall tied on 65.

Men’s interclub is underway– Division 5 won 10-5 against Titahi Bay away and Division 11 won 9.5 to 5.5 against Boulcotts Farm – keep up the good work guys! … Continue Reading

Kuranui Girl’s Football’s great season

December 19, 2018 December 2019, Sports Comments Off on Kuranui Girl’s Football’s great season

The Kuranui Girl’s First Eleven football team has enjoyed a very successful season winning their competition for the second year in a row and also completing the season undefeated. The team was also named as the Kuranui Team of the Year at the College’s Awards Evening .

A highlight was competing at the New Zealand Secondary Schools football competition for the Grant Jarvis Trophy which was held held over four days at Whanganui.  This competition attracts the best teams from colleges all over New Zealand with a total of twenty four teams taking part. Kuranui reached the semi finals to come in fourth place.  Given that Kuranui team is from a small college compared with most of the other competing teams this was a very meritorious placing.

Coach Chris James commented that in his considerable coaching experience he had never come across a friendlier or more dedicated group.

The team is really grateful to have such an experienced coach as Chris whose training expertise was certainly a factor in their success.  Also a big thanks to their manager Wendy Turton  who looked after the organisational side of things to ensure that everything ran smoothly.

Martinborough Golf Report

December 19, 2018 December 2019, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough Golf Report

As we move out of spring into summer, we can only hope that we might get more use of our umbrellas as shade from the sun rather than the incessant rain we’ve endured over the past couple of weeks.

Tournaments: A few weeks ago we hosted the “Baahaahaa Trophy” with Eketahuna.  Men’s: 1st Steven Croft, 2nd Trevor Petersen & Michael Wyeth (Eke.).  Ladies – 1st Jane Terpstra, 2nd Karen Stephens, 3rd Mariana McDermott.  Martinborough beat Eketahuna (by the skin of their teeth!).  Seventeen couples entered the 36 hole mixed foursomes; Gross:- 1st Nuki Gordon & Sereana Phillips, 2nd Mr & Mrs DRIP.  Nett:- 1st Mr & Mrs Gumboot (who also won the Sunday stableford challenge with a brilliant 48 points AND put the winnings on the bar – Cheers guys!) 2nd Rick Hargreaves & Elaine Howe. Stableford:- 1st Ro & Lyle Griffiths, 2nd Mr & Mrs RD2. Thanks to sponsors Pain & Kershaw.  On 25th November, Martinborough hosted Royal Wellington at the home to contest the Bidwill Cup.   This golf match between Martinborough and Royal Wellington has been played every year for about 60 years.  Last year we played at Heretaunga and lost the cup pretty decisively.  This year on our home course we managed to win (by a narrow margin – but who’s counting?!). … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …
