“Over the Hill” tennis tourney (not the players)

February 13, 2024 February 2024, Sports Comments Off on “Over the Hill” tennis tourney (not the players)

Runners-up of the Men’s Doubles Gold (L to R): Jacob Emery & Ed Wilkie and winners Jason Canning & Marc Paulik.

Over the scorching weekend of 13 – 14 January 2024, Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club hosted its annual “Over the Hill” tournament.

The Men’s and Women’s doubles on Saturday and mixed doubles on Sunday provided a riveting display of skill, with the draw efficiently managed by Jacob Emery from Dry River Tennis Centre, ensuring a seamlessly run event. The draw had to be split into tiers to accommodate the overwhelming number of entries and complete games within daylight hours!

Amid the competitive matches, participants and spectators enjoyed a delicious lunch and sizzling BBQ, fostering a sense of community.

The hot weather on Saturday added to the summer vibe, while Sunday brought a challenge with the wind picking up during the mixed doubles.

The tournament’s success was a collective effort, not only from the players but also thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the incredible generosity of sponsors.

These sponsors, showcasing the best of Martinborough, provided gifts and vouchers. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all sponsors and volunteers, whose commitment played a vital role in making the “Over the Hill” tournament a memorable success for the Martinborough tennis community. Congratulations to all the winners as anticipation builds for another fantastic event next year!

Junior golf in Martinborough going strong

February 13, 2024 February 2024, Sports Comments Off on Junior golf in Martinborough going strong

Sunday 14 January saw 34 adult and child teams competing in a two person ambrose. It was a hugely successful day, with not only Martinborough teams but also from Masterton and Wellington. It was also wonderful to see so many families out to support the kids, creating a great family day out.

The event was run over two competitions, 10 holes for the more experienced and 8 holes for the beginners. The 10 hole winners were Mike and Riley Lambert,  the 8 hole winners Aaron and Archie White.

Debbie Donaldson and Josh Hawkins organised the event and were extremely grateful for the very generous support from great local sponsors, with P & K providing the BBQ, sausages and bread.  Royal Wellington Golf Course provided a voucher for four to play there (which was won in a random prize draw by Josh Hawkins – so a very popular winner for that!)

There were also 24 kids who took part in a golf coaching holiday programme run by the professionals from Masterton Golf Club. These two events have shown there is high interest in Junior golf around the club and the aim is to build on this success.

The next big event at the club is the pro am which will take place on Thursday 1 st February.

This annual event is the highlight of the club year with around 40 professionals playing alongside teams of three amateurs. There are always amazing prizes provided by local sponsors and some from further afield. A full roundup of the event will be in the March edition of The Star.

2024 is shaping up to be an amazing year for the club and its members. If you’d like any  information on joining or about junior golf please get in touch with the office.

Eight medal haul for local wrestlers

November 3, 2023 November 2023, Sports Comments Off on Eight medal haul for local wrestlers

The wrestling season came to a competitive end with the National Championships held in Tauranga in early October. The Featherston Club team of Duncan Allen-Alloway, Nate George, Wairangi Sargent, Tommy Read & Angus Read came home with four gold and four silvers, an excellent result as the wrestlers competed in multiple age groups and weight categories.

The club enjoyed a dinner at the end of season wind-up, presenting cups to our junior class with Taine Sargent, Archer Coulson, Mania SInclair, Charlie-Marie Sargent and Ashlyn Sargent all recognised for their contribution over the season.

We also lauded Duncan Allen-Alloway who won the BNZ Trophy for Outstanding Sporting Achievement in Senior Sport at Kuranui College.

Lastly we congratulate Angus Read for winning the Greytown Rotary Youth Award for providing inspiration and contribution to his community and Wairangi and Charlie-Marie Sargent who are finalists in the Wairarapa Maori Sports Awards.

It’s very humbling to see our tamariki recognised by their communities for the hard work they put in and our gratitude as always to our trainers Jeremy Sargent, Randall Hancock & Chris Sargent.  Wishing you all a happy summer sports season and see you back on the mat in mid-March for the 2024 Wrestling season.
