Featherston wrestlers continue winning

October 13, 2023 October 2023, Sports Comments Off on Featherston wrestlers continue winning

Archer Coulson inspects his gold medal.

The penultimate tournament of the year the Wellington Regional Championships were held at Kapiti College on Saturday 9 September.

A strong team from Featherston attended with some of our junior wrestlers building towards this tournament through two terms of training. It also signalled the end of the junior and intermediate season.

Medals went to Manaia Sinclair, Archer Coulson, Charlimarie Sargent and Taine Sargent from our junior class. Unfortunately regular competition wrestler Ashlyn Sargent was ruled out injured. This group have competed at the tri-series events and finished strongly in the regional competition.

The senior class was represented by Nate George, Angus and Tommy Read with Wairangi Sargent ruled out by injury.

The season isn’t quite over for these wrestlers as we wish them well for their shot at the National Championships in Tauranga in early October.

The National Secondary Schools tournament saw Duncan Allen-Alloway, Angus Read and Tommy Read all crowned with National Schools titles winning gold representing Kuranui and Rathkeale Colleges.

We would like to take a moment to thank our supporters with a particular shout out to Scotty’s Meats.

Surprise! Even golfers hate the wet

September 12, 2023 September 2023, Sports Comments Off on Surprise! Even golfers hate the wet

Martinborough’s golf course has seen some extreme weather in its long history but possibly not as much as this winter. It has been wet, wet, wet. It started to improve to just very wet and we got to just sticky and wet. Then the sun shone ever so briefly. Now we are back to very wet!

And are we over it! Not surprisingly, many members have taken the opportunity to head to warmer climes!!

The first two weeks of August saw very few opportunities to play competitions and so the matches have started to back up. Wednesday ladies, 9 holers and Thursday Club were basically rained off both weeks. However, there were a few hardy souls that were determined to get out there and play so the course has usually had someone trudging around.

Some competitions have managed play. Weekend comps have seen varying numbers but some of the recent winners have been John Warner, Vern Anton, Brian Russo, Jason Shaw, Shane Hislop, Doug Clark, Rob Coy, Jason Burt, Josh Hawkins, Dayle Harwood, Malcolm Bridge, Brett Abercrombie, Robbie Walters, Trevor Petersen, Colin Whibley-Smith, Steven Croft and Ant North.

The greens must still be okay as putting scores have been as low as 24 (Jason Shaw) and 25 (Doug Clark). Ant North also managed to take home the Bird’s Nest (that’s two two’s in his round!).

Every other week, Tuesdays have seen the better weather – the Grumpies have managed to get around 15+ players on those “good” days. Those lucky enough to be in the winning circle include Bob Schofield, Andy Morison, Malcolm Bridge, Seamus O’Sullivan, Greg Dalton and Brett Abercrombie. During August, these guys have managed just two two’s between them – maybe the end of the month will see a few more? … Continue Reading

Featherston Wrestling Club

September 12, 2023 September 2023, Sports Comments Off on Featherston Wrestling Club

New Zealand Team at the Oceania Championships.

For the first time in over 15 years Featherston Wrestlers represented New Zealand recently with Nate George and Angus Read taking part in the Oceania Championship and pre-tournament Training Camp over early August. Both boys enjoyed the time at the Australian Institute of Sport focused on wrestling and return with new skills to share with their club mates.

Nate & Angus follow in the footsteps of their Coach Jeremy Sargent and his forebears such as Robert Algie, Nigel Sargent and many others who all performed with distinction for New Zealand wrestling teams in the past.  The club has a long history of producing wrestlers of excellent quality and with the right mix of technical skill, strength, and guile required to excel in the sport.  Pop down to 52 Fitzherbert Street on a Wednesday evening to see the honours board and recognise those legends that have laid the foundations for today.

Coming up are the National Secondary Schools tournament with Club wrestlers representing Kuranui, Rathkeale and Palmerston North Boys High School, the Wellington Regional Championships and the National Championships in Tauranga in early October.  We wish our competitors all the best.

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …
