Coffee with the (Community) Cop
By Lyle Griffiths
Jo Kelly is the new Community Constable for Martinborough, Greytown and Featherston. Already becoming a presence in town, Jo is the go-to person if we have any issues or concerns to report.
On Monday mornings between 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 a.m. she will be at Kitchener’s Dairy inviting members of the community to have Coffee with the Cop.
Crime Prevention, Security, Scams, Suspicious Activities, Dangerous driving or Traffic issues, theft of Stock. No matter what the issue, or how large or small, Jo says she’ll be on deck to help.
“I will be working with businesses to help prevent crime and suggesting methods of making premises more secure. I will also be working with Partner Agencies, Schools and Community groups. I have access to our rural team to ensure farming concerns are addressed.
“This has all contributed to a 28% reduction in crime for the Wairarapa.
“If you see us on the streets High Viz patrolling, you can approach us at any time.
“The present economic conditions are making it tough for a lot of people in our community,” shee said. “A healthy community is one that looks after all residents. We don’t want children to go hungry or not have a warm bed to sleep in. We don’t want people sleeping in cars.
“There are so many ways in which we can help. For those experiencing financial hardship, finding it difficult to get employment, or trying to manage rent hikes we can put people in touch with agencies who can help. Likewise with Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Physical Abuse.
“Scamming is also becoming so much more sophisticated. Like anything else, if it seems to be good to be true, don’t click that button without checking . First and foremost. If you see something strange happening, call or make a note of it. It is better to call than to leave a situation to get worse.
“Martinborough already has a Community Patrol car, which relies on the help of locals. Should anyone wish to support this they can email me. We are always grateful for more volunteers.
“There are several ways to contact us.
“If you are not able to get to Coffee with the Cop, you can call Police using the number 105.
“The system has now been upgraded. You will be told how many people are in the queue and if you can’t wait you can leave a number for a call back.
Otherwise, email joanne.kelly@police.govt.nz
