Community Board notes

September 23, 2019 Regular Features, September 2019 No Comments

Our last full Community Board meeting was on the 22nd August and we took the opportunity to tidy up some loose ends before the elections.

Flags
There is a new Flag Hanging system on order which will make the process of replacing our town and event flags a lot easier. We will be taking the old flags down when the new system goes up – long overdue, but this allows us to save on traffic management costs. We will be ordering some festive summer flags to brighten up the streets during December and January and, after the success of last year’s event, we’re pleased to provide MADCAPs with funding for the Christmas Parade event.

Martinborough Pool Improvements
There’s also some great work going on at the Martinborough Pool. Council will be providing and installing shade over the toddlers’ pool. Council, Community Board and Pain and Kershaw are working together on providing more seating and beautifying the grassy area. A big thank you to P&K for your financial contribution alongside a generous donation from Fred Couper’s estate. Martinborough Community Board are matching Fred’s contribution from funds donated by the old Martinborough Swimming Club and will make sure Fred is remembered with a commemorative plaque, or similar. Thank you to the P&K team for working with us on this.

Grants
It was great to hear from a small group committed to developing a Mountain Bike Flow track close to Martinborough, whilst the project is not yet at the stage for grant funding this is an exciting proposal and Community Board fully support it. I will continue to work with this group and Council to see if we can make this happen. We also received successful grant applications from Tora Bombora and The Epilepsy Association of New Zealand.

Pain Estate
Council are continuing to work on the information requested regarding the Pain Estate. The report will be available before the Community Board Extraordinary Meeting on 19th September. The meeting will be held in public in the Waihinga Centre Supper room from 6pm with time set aside for Public Participation. You can e-mail our committee secretary angela.williams@swdc.govt.nz if you wish to speak. We will do our best to accommodate all speakers but if this is not possible please note that priority will be given to those who have not spoken before.

Local Elections
It is great to see so many candidates from Martinborough standing for election. I think this year has shown why local government is important, please enrol and vote to have your say in the way our district is run.
