Tēna koutou kātoa

A big hello and Kia ora to everyone within our region, from your new Martinborough Community Board. We thank Mike Beckett for arranging this space for us in each months Martinborough Star, so that we can keep you all updated on your Boards activities, over the next triennium. We will be rotating writing this column each month so that you will hear from each of your Boards members.

First, we would like to acknowledge and thank the people of our district for their amazing community spirit and care for one another during the Covid-19 epidemic. We thank the Anglican Church, WaiWaste Wairarapa and Ngāti Kahungunu for providing and distributing food and care packages to our local whānau, elderly and people in need over this time. To our essential workers and those local businesses which kept our community going – Ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa! We thank you all and we couldn’t have made it through without you.

Your Martinborough Community Board is made up of the 4 members voted for in the last election and 2 of your Martinborough Ward Councillors. Please don’t hesitate to contact any one of us if you have any concerns, or ideas on what you would like to see within Martinborough and our coastal areas.

The Boards details and contacts are as follows:

  • Mel Maynard – Chair – 027 231 8867
  • Aidan Ellims – Deputy Chair – 027 497 2767
  • Nathan Fenwick – 027 518 5237
  • Michael Honey – 027 600 0579
  • Councillor Pam Colenso – 027 441 4892
  • Councillor Pip Maynard – 021 683 638

Since I’m first up, I’d like to take this opportunity to give everyone an update on the Pain Estate.

We have been working with the Amenities team within Council to bring the beautiful Pain Estate home and cottage up to standard. This includes fixing doors and windows, repairing the roof, painting throughout the homes and providing heat pumps and rangehoods.

There is now a proper Pain Estate Maintenance Schedule created to ensure that tasks are clearly outlined, and completed on time, to prevent this state of disrepair from reoccurring.

The Community Board have asked Council Officers to review the Corporate and In-house Professional Services cost allocations which were paid by the Pain Farm, to Council, to ensure their maintaining and caring for the property.

As of July 2020, Council staff is undertaking a review of Council’s management of the Pain Estate and will be advising whether we can recover these Council charges for the years when it was clearly not looked after.

We are all looking forward to receiving the information and outcome of their review.

Ka kite āno. Mel Maynard – Chair, Martinborough Community Board
