Community garden

April 10, 2018 April 2018 No Comments

On Sunday 25th March a group of gardeners participated in our latest workshop ‘Getting a Garden Started.’ The focus was on demonstrating simple ways to start your own garden as there is nothing quite like picking freshly grown produce and cooking it for dinner. Preparation of beds, planting and maintenance were covered and the community garden now has a fresh new bed planted with broad beans, cauliflower, winter lettuce and spring onions …be sure to look out for these over the coming months at the larder and thank you to everyone who attended.

Coming up in the garden on Sunday 8th April from 10am – noon is our first harvest celebration. Along with fresh harvests to sample from the garden, there will be baking and preserves and activities for the kids. The garden has now been underway for 6 months and the harvest celebration is a great opportunity to come down and see what the community has achieved in this time.

The garden is now focussing on preparing for winter planting, a few jobs to carry out in any garden during this time include:

  • Rejuvenate well worked soil. Plenty of deep digging, a good sprinkle of lime, some worm wee if you have it and a top up of compost.
  • Save seeds from high yielding, healthy plants and finish drying them off indoors.
  • Make leaf litter. Rake up fallen leaves and put them in a black plastic bag to decompose. Once they are ready, add them to your compost or put them straight on the garden.

As always, the garden welcomes new volunteers to come and be a part of this great community initiative. Regular gardening days are Wednesdays and Sundays from 10am – noon. Whether you can come weekly or can just pop in for a chat to see what is happening, we would love to see you there.

Happy gardening!
