New recycling service launches 9 September

We’re really looking forward to the new kerbside wheelie bin recycling service which is set to begin the week commencing Monday 9 September. If you’re eligible for the service you may have already received your recycling wheelie bin, with a bright yellow lid. If you haven’t received yours yet, it will be on its way very soon.

The wheelie bin is to be used for non-glass recyclables and the old green and maroon crates for glass-only recycling. The crates and the wheelie bins will be collected on alternating weeks.

Everyone in South Wairarapa puts their recycling wheelie bin out on Week 1, and their crates out on Week 2. While it’s a little bit confusing, the new recycling pick-up service actually begins on Week 2, according to the calendar included in the booklet that was delivered with your wheelie bin.

The calendar and all the information you need about the new service is also available at www.wairecycle.nz.

Community board meeting to discuss Pain Farm

There will be an extraordinary meeting of the Martinborough Community Board on Thursday 19 September to discuss matters relating to Pain Farm. The meeting will be held at 6pm in the Supper Room at the Waihinga Centre.

Martinborough water supply – towards resilience

Plans are progressing towards the installation of a manganese removal plant to enable the town’s water to be supplied once again from all the bores and chlorinated on a permanent basis. Chlorination will provide the long-term solution for supplying clean, clear, safe and secure water to Martinborough.

This summer, until the manganese extraction plant is operational, we’re reliant on water supply from the bore with the lowest manganese, so everyone will need to play a part in conserving water. Usually, in the summer months the community can expect outdoor watering restrictions in January or February.

This summer we’ll be carefully monitoring water consumption and putting water restrictions in place if consumption goes above 1,200m³/day. People can expect one week’s notice before restrictions are put in place. To find out more, visit http://www.swdc.govt.nz/martinborough-water-supply.

The Lessons Learned Report following the two boil water notice incidents should be available on our website soon.

Have your say and vote

It is important Council reflects the community it serves, and your vote in the local elections helps ensure that this is the case. A full list of the candidates standing for South Wairarapa District mayor, council and community boards is listed on SWDC’s website.

Later this month, registered voters will receive voting papers and a booklet with who the candidates are and their statements about why they are standing and what they hope to achieve. The voting period runs from 20 September to 12 October.

It’s your democratic right to vote, so make sure it counts! To learn about the key issues facing the South Wairarapa District Council, its financial position and its major projects scheduled in the next three years, read our pre-election report, which is available on our website.

Positive Ageing Strategy launched

Last month we launched the Wairarapa Positive Ageing Strategy with a successful event at the Carterton Events Centre. All three of the region’s councils contributed to the strategy’s development, with its launch an important milestone for Wairarapa.

The aim of the Positive Ageing Strategy is to ensure older people living in our community are valued and their wellbeing is factored into all significant decisions made from here on in. To implement the strategy, Emily Clark has been appointed to the role of Positive Ageing Strategy Coordinator.

Spatial Plan feedback deadline extended

Council has extended the timeframe in which South Wairarapa residents can give feedback on the Spatial Plan. The closing date is now 5pm on Friday 13 September. It’s important to get local feedback if we want the district to reflect our community’s needs in future.

It is now easier to give feedback with a ‘Spatial Plan Feedback’ button under the ‘Do it online’ section on SWDC’s website homepage. Clicking the button will take you straight to Survey Monkey where you can download the Discussion Document and fill in the feedback form.

The Spatial Plan will help balance the environmental, social, economic, and quality of life factors affecting our community and guide allocation of resources, such as land use and core infrastructure like roads, water supplies and parks. The Draft Spatial Plan will be released for formal consultation later in the year.

Waihinga Centre finalist in design awards

Martinborough’s Waihinga Centre has been named a finalist in the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards. The community hub and restored historic town hall has been nominated under the Public and Institutional Spaces category. Winners will be announced at an event in Auckland on 4 October. Fingers crossed!
