Councillor Comment

March 10, 2021 March 2021 No Comments

It has been a lovely warm February and I personally am looking forward to this continuing into March. Water restrictions are in place in Martinborough and residents can only used hand-held hoses or watering cans to water their gardens.  This is in addition to the all year-round watering on alternate days.

` The higher restrictions are necessary to ensure there is enough water for everyone throughout the summer months.  These restrictions also apply to Featherston & Greytown.  Updates on the water restrictions and tips on how to conserve water can be found on the Council website www.swdc.govt.nz.

Council has approved the new Wairarapa Solid Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw.  The new bylaw, which comes into effect for the Wairarapa on the 17th April 21 will bring all parts of the Wellington and Wairarapa regions into line on rubbish and recycling matters with the aim of limiting or reducing the amount of waste going to our landfill.

It will be important for everyone to take a positive approach to waste management and hopefully through education and encouragement and everyone making a personal commitment – we will be able to make improvements in recycling and a reduction in general waste.  To kick start this off I would encourage the use of signage on letterboxes to reduce the receipt of unsolicited/unaddressed mail or advertising material.

By now everyone will have received their property valuations from Quotable Value NZ, some will be happy and some not so.  These valuations have both a land value and an improvement value itemised and the total of these are the capital value of your property. Please note these are not the market value of your property, a market value can be obtained either through a real estate agent or a registered valuer.  Council will use the land value of your property when setting the rates for the 2021/2022 rating year.

On a final note, my council commitments for this coming month are

3rd  – Wairarapa Library Service Joint Committee

8th  – Wellington Region Waste Minimalisation Plan Joint Committee

9th  – Considine Park meeting

17th – Planning & Regulatory meeting

30th – Council meeting

Along with this we will also have a number of Long Term Plan meetings and workshops as the Consultation Document needs to be adopted at the Council meeting on the 30th March.
