The irrigator discharges waste water to land

Martinborough Waste Water:

Martinborough has commenced its discharge of waste water to land through a travelling irrigator (as per the above photo).  The irrigator has operated over the summer months to 5 hectares of land adjacent to the settling ponds.  During this time there were no discharges to the river for 106 days out of the 162 day period which commenced on the 1st November.  Discharge to the river only occurs in times of above average flow, reducing the effects on the river.  The completion of the first stage of the new consent will see 100% of discharge to land by 2035.

During the above period the irrigated grass has been cut three times with around 160 large round bales  being harvested.  I am advised by Council staff that these are now available for sale.  If you are interested in purchasing any of the baleage, please contact Lawrence on 3069611.

Footpaths:

As you walk around town you will have seen council contractors hard at work carrying out footpath maintenance.  It is pleasing to see all those ‘tripping hazards’ being eliminated and lovely new even surfaces being laid. The work should be completed by the end of May.

Transfer Station:

Council is replacing the roof netting at the Transfer Station.  This will help to ensure that the rubbish is contained within the confines of this area and not be scattered across the farm land. The netting repairs will require the transfer station to be closed for a Wednesday in May. The date will be notified when it is confirmed.

Reducing waste going to landfills was one of the items consulted on during the LTP.  I am looking forward to seeing the results of this, with hopefully lots of comments from residents as to whether they support or disagree with having wheelie bins for recycling, e-waste collection and provision for kerbside food waste collection.

Pirinoa:

The replacement water main in Pirinoa has recently been completed at a cost of $40,000.  This has proved to be a major asset as it has stopped the previous water outages caused by water leaks.  In terms of water conservation any unexplained loss of water is an issue we are all concerned about and it is fantastic to see this fixed so that Pirinoa residents received an uninterrupted supply.

Animal Education:

This is an unusual heading and I was thrilled to learn that Council’s Bylaws Officers are happy to talk to children and adults regarding the safe correct techniques/skills to handle themselves around dogs.  Safety is the key message and Lynne and Andrew are more than happy to talk to groups of either adults or children.  With adults it is more around where there is a need to visit/work/volunteer at properties  regardless of whether you know there is a dog there or not.  With children it is around the safe way to approach a dog and how to avoid being bitten by a dog.   All of these talks are free and if you are interested in finding out more please ring Lynne or Andrew on 3069611.

Have a great month of May, keep warm and safe.
