ESSENTIAL WOODWORKING SKILLS

A course designed and sponsored by  Martinborough Mens Shed and Mitre 10

This ‘hands-on’ course is designed to help you master the basic hand skills for safe wood- working. Experienced supervisors will demonstrate techniques to guide your learning and supervise health and safety issues. You may have a specific project in mind. You can work on it throughout all the sessions – this is strongly encouraged, but we will ensure your basic skills are up to scratch and you are safe!

The Venue is the  The Martinborough Mens Shed, Cork St, Martinborough (behind the Town Hall)

What is the cost of the course?:There is a session charge of $25 per person.

Sessions: Two hour sessions each Thursday, from 4 – 6 pm.  You can attend as many Thursday sessions as you like.

Course format: The first session will focus on health and safety, the different types of timber, tool handling and the safe use of powered hand tools.  The use of skill saws, table saws and milling machinery will also be demonstrated. You then work on your own project but with help and supervision as needed.

What do I need?: Timber and basic equipment will be provided at the Mens Shed, but you are encouraged to bring your own tools and timber, especially if you have a specific project.

What if I have no equipment?: The following list is a guide if you choose to set yourself up with the basics. A basic pack for the course has been designed for your purchase, with the support of Mitre 10 Martinborough, and includes the tools listed below. A fold-up work bench is useful especially if you don’t have access to a work bench or work area.

Hammer, Clamps x 2, Chisels x 3 – wide , medium, tenon. Tenon saw, Folding rule, Pencil, Adjustable set square, Ear muffs (essential,)Mask (essential), Folding work bench (optional for the course)

Covid QR sign in is essential and masks must be worn. Classes may be subject to  changes in  COVID regulations at short notice.

Please note that if you wish to work outside the Thursday sessions we can arrange for you to have a personal supervisor during normal Shed opening hours on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9-12. You can apply for membership at any stage – the annual fee is $30.
