Farming centenary
In 1919 the land adjacent to the Ruamahanga river at Pahautea was divided into dairy farms for soldiers returning for the First World War. Thirty farms were established on Pahautea Road and ten others on side roads, this was the biggest soldier’s land settlement development following the Great War.
There are still descendants of three of the original families still in the area, the Ness, Bargh and Bentley families.
