Featherston Wrestling Club

August 2, 2022 August 2022, Sports No Comments

June saw the start of Regional & National wrestling tournaments.  The Wellington Regional Championships is back on the national calendar after 31 years.  This illustrates the growth in the Wellington region clubs – Featherston, Tawa and Waikanae.

The club also had a team travel to Hamilton in July to attend the North Island Championships earning 8 medals.  Martinborough local Nate George was in the medals at both tournaments.

Senior team members were then able to attend a national training camp at Lake Karapiro for 2 days of intensive training with the national coaching team.

A special thanks to Adamsons Mobil Service Station in Featherston for their help with travel costs to all these tournaments. Their support means our coaches and kids can travel, often long distances, to compete.

The junior classes on Wednesday evenings in Featherston have continued to be popular with wrestlers of all levels of experience coming together to enjoy game based coaching provided.  The senior class is held on Sundays at 12.30.  For more information please contact featherstonamateurwrestling@gmail.com

In August we look forward to a local tri tournament with neighbouring clubs Tawa and Waikanae.  These are a great format for both beginners and the experienced wrestlers who are preparing for national tournaments later in the year.  Watching our younger wrestlers dance around the mat brings a smile to everybody in the gym!

The National Secondary Schools tournament in late August will have students from both Kuranui & Rathkeale competing this year and we wish them all the best along with the NZ Commonwealth Games Wrestling team who are in Birmingham, England during August.
