Finnish Cellist to Join Martinborough Music Festival

June 9, 2021 June 2021 No Comments

  September 17-19, 2021

“This Festival will definitely be the highlight of 2021. Performing with a live audience is not to be taken for granted anymore” Timo-Veikko Valve (Tipi).

Cellist, Tipi, is another musician who will be new to audiences attending the Martinborough Music Festival in September. Recommended by Festival assistant director, Wilma Smith, Tipi is “thrilled to reach some new ears”, his description of the Festival audience.

Based in Australia where he is Principal Cello for the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Tipi grew up in Helsinki. He was encouraged to pick up a cello because a teacher at his local school, where he was a toddler, decided he “looked like a cellist”. Tipi is still unsure what this means.

His sense of fun is evident from the vibrant coral case in which he carries his 1616 Brothers Amati Cello. After graduating from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the Edsberg Music Institute in Stockholm, Tipi applied for a position in the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

He quips that what tempted him to apply for a position with an Australian orchestra was that if he “totally crashed and burned” no-one at home would ever find out. Needless to say this did not happen. A well regarded cellist, Tipi has appeared as a soloist with all the major orchestras in Finland, and as a chamber musician throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States.

Of the Festival, Tipi says “there is some absolute stellar repertoire in this year’s programme”. He is looking forward to performing in the Festival with the “opportunity to meet new people, share ideas and in the end take something from that home with you”.

The “stellar repertoire” that Tipi speaks of has been put together on a MMF21 Spotify playlist. You can listen to excerpts of the works that will be presented in September via  https://spoti.fi/2TeNn9G
