From the mayor

We’re very busy at Council so there’s lots for me to cover off this month. If you need more information about anything, please visit our website or Facebook page, or you can always email us on enquiries@swdc.govt.nz or call on 06 306 9611.

It’s really important that our Council represents the community it serves, and that you have your say on who you want to represent you. For all those thinking about standing in the local election, a Candidate Briefing is being held at the Waihinga Centre at 7pm on 10 July.

New Council Chief Executive Harry Wilson joined us a month ago. Harry has made Martinborough his home so you will see him out and about in the community. You can find out more about Harry in his interview article on page X.

Harry is very keen for Council to progress its work on identifying and acknowledging the lessons learned following Martinborough’s boil water incidents earlier this year. Corrective actions following the technical review are underway, as is preparation towards finding a long-term solution to supplying the town with secure, clean, clear and safe water. Council is getting ready to start district-wide community consultation and engagement on this.

We will soon also be starting a discussion with you on the South Wairarapa District’s Spatial Plan. This is needed to help us prepare for ongoing growth and development in our district; to provide a blueprint for where development should occur, what kind of development, and how much. We want to hear from you about how you want South Wairarapa to look in the future to develop a Draft Spatial Plan.  Look out for the Discussion Document in an upcoming MidWeek, on our website and in our libraries.

Wheelie bins for recycling are coming soon to households who receive the council recycling collection service. The wheelie bins are being delivered over the coming weeks, with the service expected to start mid to late August. As well as giving extra recycling capacity, they will have lids with clips to keep recyclables from blowing away. Smart tags on the bins will also help identify those that go missing and enable residents to check online for near real-time updates on when their bin will be emptied.

The current recycling crates are not going away, but instead will be used for glass only. Wheelie bins and crates for glass will be picked up on alternate weeks. When you receive your wheelie bin, you’ll get a handbook to answer any questions. In the meantime, you’ll find frequently asked questions on our website.

A reminder that if you’ve not paid your Dog Registration Fees yet, please do so soon as possible as registration payments after 31 July incur a 50% late fee. Applications to register dogs can be made at the Council offices or library in Martinborough, as well as at Greytown and Featherston Libraries

As we’re getting close to the pre-election period, this will be my last column for a while.
