Fundraising for Wharekaka

March 10, 2021 March 2021 No Comments

Like other charities in these tough times, fundraising has been top of mind for the Wharekaka Board and Auxiliary.

Wharekaka’s wonderful Auxiliary held a stall at the Christmas Te Kairanga market, courtesy of Foley Family Wines, and raised over $1500. Goodies such as superb shortbread, meringues, and Christmas cake were all snapped up by fair-goers.

At the February Martinborough Fair, the Auxiliary produced morning and afternoon teas in the Lions’ Den. The scent of fresh baking wafting down the street certainly drew the crowds. Star scone maker, Carolyn Thompson, chair of the Auxiliary, was on baking duty from dawn until after lunchtime. A fantastic team effort raised over $2500 for Wharekaka. Many thanks to the Lions for this excellent opportunity.

The Auxiliary has recently donated money to allow the completion of the water tank project. This much-needed resource allows Wharekaka Aged Care Facility to function even when there is a problem with local water. A large tank had been purchased but could not be connected due to plumbing and filtration costs. The Auxiliary has added to funding from South Wairarapa District Council to allow completion of the project.

Members of all the South Wairarapa communities are currently being contacted with an invitation to contribute to the Oak Tree Community. This initiative has been the subject of previous Martinborough Star articles and is hitting the ground running. The Oak Tree Community is a programme of regular giving to Wharekaka and we are deeply grateful to all who have contributed to date. A small function to say thank you is planned for late March when our Patron, David Kershaw, will update donors on progress.
