Shirley Rattray celebrating her Hole in One

Shirley Rattray celebrating her Hole in One

The newly appointed green keeper, Richard Whisker, is making his mark on the course, with a number of projects underway before the wet winter weather sets in. Work includes the annual hollow coring and top dressing on our greens, a complete rebuild of the 16th Tee, and scarifying of tees.

A definite highlight this month was a first-ever Hole in One by a club stalwart, Shirley Rattray. Playing partners Adele Carins and Karen Shaw tracked the progress of the ball all the way to the pin and saw it disappear into the cup on the Par 3 16th hole. There were squeals of delight heard from those on the 7th tee, and players ran from all directions on the course to congratulate Shirley. Well done, and not bad for someone in their 80’s, more than twice my age!

The ladies Riverside Cup team is continuing to perform well. In the latest round playing Mahunga the Selector was delighted with the results, which saw close games and a team win 4-2, keeping Martinborough at the top of the table. Martinborough had wins from Sandra Petersen 2/1, Sylvia Beavis 4/2, Marion McKenzie 3/1 and our new interclub player Jo Loe 2/1, well done ladies.

The Junior team have completed their first year of involvement in the Watt Cup, a Wellington Regional Competition for junior golfers. They performed well and represented the Martinborough Club admirably in what is a very tough competition (pun intended!).

Colin Whibley-Smith has now taken on the role of coaching a number of our youngest players, with the hope that these children will become our future members.
