Greytown Little Theatre play sweeps top awards
Greytown Little Theatre’s production of ‘An Unseasonable Fall of Snow’ written by Gary Henderson and directed by John Gilberthorpe has won the ‘Best Overall Production’ Award in the Wellington District Theatre Federation Full Length Play Competition 2017.
In addition to winning the Best Overall Production the play also won the Best Drama Production and the plays two featured actors, Colton Stuart and Alexander Southey won the award for ‘Best Ensemble Actors’
The Full Length Play Competition is organised by the Wellington District Theatre Federation to promote full length productions by community theatre groups throughout the Wellington Region. The competition is spread over several months and this year attracted seventeen entries from groups in Mana, Hutt Valley, Porirua, Eastbourne, Newlands, Wellington City and Greytown. Each play is evaluated by the same Adjudicator who attends a performance during the production season for each play. The awards are known as the ‘Antoinette Awards’.
Jillian Carpenter, the Competition Adjudicator, said in her report of ‘An Unseasonable Fall of Snow’; “I was mesmerised by the whole play” and “I was gripped by the play from start to finish. It was riveting”.
John Gilberthorpe, the plays Director said that “the awards are a wonderful recognition of the stunning performances given by the plays two principal actors, Colton Stuart and Alexander Southey. The power, depths of emotion and the subtleties and fragilities of these individuals they brought to the characters of Arthur and Liam were keenly observed and powerfully portrayed by both Colton and Alexander.
“The play, a physiological interrogation and its theme of suicide challenged the actors, Director and Assistant Director Yvonne Way and we are delighted that our production has been given this recognition”, John said, “We don’t produce our plays for awards, but it is very satisfying when others give recognition and acknowledgment of your work”
‘An Unseasonable Fall of Snow’ played to five packed performances in July and was very positively received. The Wairarapa Times Age Reviewer, Jan Farr, noted in her review at the time that the production was “tight, fast-moving and riveting and, “this is a quality production of a deeply considered and carefully crafted play”.
