Greytown Little Theatre

The son threatens his father in the production of Antigone by the Greytown Little Theatre The father is Creon, the Greek King. His son is the hot-tempered Haemon, played by Colton Stuart of Martinborough, who is in love with Antigone, a daughter of King Oedipus. 

This modern adaptation by Seamus Heaney is the New Zealand premiere of the Greek drama by Sophocles. The Director for Antigone is Patrick Craddock who is now residing in Greytown after working overseas for some years. He has directed a number of plays both in New Zealand and abroad including The Bad Seed, No Exit, Antony and Cleopatra, Macbeth, Medea, Ferringhi and Pinocchio.

“This adaptation of the ancient Sophocles Play is dramatic with its modern dialogue and it will engage audiences of all ages.  The personality of each character is sharply drawn and there is constant tension and the resolution of these conflicts throughout the play.”

The arena staging is intimate and engaging for the audience. With the new lighting bar being erected to support the atmosphere of the drama, it should be an exciting Wairarapa theatrical event when Antigone come onto the stage with her opening words. Tickets for “Antigone” are available from The Village Art Shop, Greytown 3048255 and at the Theatre Door. Prices are $10 for students and $15 for adults.

Performance dates are Friday 19, Saturday 20 July at 8 pm with a matinee on Sunday 21 July at 2 pm. With further performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 25, 26 and 27 July at 8 pm.
