On Saturday 26th June, members of the Hau Ariki Marae warmly welcomed guests to view the recent renovations that have occurred over the last four to five months.

$370,000 was recently provided by the Provisional Growth Fund and the money has been put to good use. The alterations enhance the Marae, creating a multipurpose centre, which in the event of a major emergency, could be used as a Civil Defence Centre.

Kevin Haunui, Trevor Hawkins, and Les Roberts have overseen the

Two 25,000 litre water tanks, complete with pumping systems have been sited alterations.on what was known as the carving shed. (Te Heru Mai Tawhiti).  These will supply the sprinklers and fire wall system installed in the main meeting house, (Te Whare Wananga o Tüpai).  In the longer term the sprinkler system will be extended to cover the entire marae.  An extra tank will be installed to provide potable water for emergency use. The tanks have already been filled, courtesy of the fire brigade.

In the area used for catering and socialising, (Ngā Waka a Kupe), the kitchen has been extended to create a food preparation area.  Stainless steel benches and open shelved cupboards for storage provide a workable centre for the provision of large quantities of food. A chilling room has been created behind the kitchen with the chiller kindly donated by Pain and Kershaw.

Further work has been completed in the dining hall with the creation of an audio-visual room providing CCTV and Wi-Fi access via the satellite dish. New storage facilities house equipment such as a large mobile TV screen, and extra chairs, and tables.

In the accommodation block the ablution area has been upgraded providing a more modern system for the present custodians of the Marae.

All in all, it has been an excellent start towards achieving the 25-year vision planned for the Hau Ariki Marae said Kevin Haunui, Chair of the Marae Committee. “Les Roberts’ expertise in safety and emergency has been invaluable.  Likewise, so has Trevor Hawkins practical knowhow and commitment”.

The Marae Committee also wishes to emphasise that this facility may be used by the whole of the Martinborough Community for personal or group events. Should you wish to book for a special occasion email,  hauarikievent@gmail.com or check out the Hau Ariki website https://www.hauariki.com.
