Lady golfers show Rosebowl winning ways
September has been an up and down month weatherwise for golfers, some beautiful early spring days followed by cold and rain. Thankfully for the important days the weather has mostly come to the party.
Early in the month the Cotter Rosebowl was successfully defended at Carterton by Martinborough’s team of Jo-Anne Loe, Juliana Allen, Emily Loughnan, Bindy McLeod, Jenny Wilkie, and Angela Busby. Well done ladies.
A number of ladies also played at the Riversdale Open on Sunday 22 nd September with Joe-Anne Loe winning her division.
Sunday 22 September saw 24 mixed teams battle it out for the AB Martin Mixed Foursomes trophy. The AB Martin cup was donated by Arthur Baird Martin in 1967 who was a very active member of the club. Many hours were spent by him during the early years of the club planting the oak trees and many others on the course that we enjoy today.
His grand-children Kate (Crombie), James, Barb (Hoadley) and Pip are all active members of club, though James retired from the game after a confrontation with a bull which seriously injured his arm (we don’t know what happened to the bull!).
After a torrential downpour 30 minutes before the shotgun start the weather cleared to a fine but windy afternoon. The winners were Kris and Mark Mason with a net 71 followed by father and daughter Trevor Peterson and Kelly Taylor with net 73. Kate, Barb and James presented the winners with a ‘temporary’ trophy as the real one is safely tucked away in storage until the new clubhouse opens.
The mens 36 Hole Strokeplay Championship was played on 14 September: first was Shayne Hammond Net 144, second Alistair Boyne Net 148, and third Charlie Jackson Net 149. Well done to all who played _ the weather was a little iffy on the day.
The Men’s Captains Trophy was also concluded, congratulations to the winner Doug Clark, and runner-up Shayne Hammond.
October is a busy month for competitions with the mens 54/36 hole strokeplay and the ever popular Lamb and Chardonnay, this year sponsored by Poppies.
The clubhouse is looking fabulous with scaffolding now removed and internal finishings well under way. We’re not across the line yet and further fundraising is needed to make sure we get the clubhouse that members and the wider community can be proud of.
A number of initiatives are in progress and in particular new and exciting opportunities for businesses to get involved through sponsorships and other options. It is planned to hold a pre-opening function to introduce existing and potential new sponsors to the benefits of being part of Martinborough Golf Club. If you would like to register your interest please get in touch with the club (office@martinboroughgolfclub.co.nz attention Emily Loughlin).
There are few bottles of the 2017 SeiCento Pinot Noir fundraiser still available, check it out at www.seicento.co.nz. $20 from each bottle goes to the new clubhouse fund and over $7,000 has already been raised – it’s a good drop!
