Library book club

July 23, 2019 July2019 No Comments

A lively session with lots of discussion and the books presented were quite varied

‘Becoming’ by  Michelle Obama was found to be inspiring and a good read – the story of how a black woman from the wrong side of the tracks became the first lady in the US. And I have put it on my list of books to read

And any age can belong to this book club! ‘The Whale Book’ was young May’s choice, and she talked about owls but I must admit I ‘m not sure of the connection

The book ‘9 Pints’ filled in a lot of gaps in some of our member’s knowledge Like did you know blood is made in the bone marrow? Or about the man who invented sanitary pads? Or the connection between blood donors and mad cow disease? Most of our club have now read this book and recommend it wholeheartedly.

The same reader had just finished ‘Lord of the Rings’ and her comment was you have to be in the right mood to read this book.

‘Joseph Anton’ a memoir by Salman Rushdie follows the authors life story and it poses the challenging question of when is censorship appropriate? (not ever) and his life becoming a literal prison after the publication of ‘The Satanic Verses’ Actually I found it a good book. And the protection offered by the UK to one of it’s citizens was awesome although intrusive.

PD James, ‘Death comes to Pemberton’ continues the Jane Austen story ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and this sequel becomes a murder mystery but was thought to need a better editor

‘The Shed’ – was presented, just to illustrate the library has great magazines as well as books,  and our reader suggested we don’t let the Men’s Shed know for they would all want to borrow this copy. We looked at the amazing photos of a bike made entirely of wood.

‘When God was a Rabbit’ (intriguing title) ticked all the boxes. Middlemarch was tough going and requires perseverance but some of our group thought ‘The Book Thief” also was hard going and others thought it an amazing piece of literature.

We finished by all saying how much we miss Shirley’s presence and we are all hopeful for a great outcome and her return to the book club next month on the 12th July at 10am
