Library news
It’s that time again – yes, school holidays. Sorry we don’t have any activities on in the library these two weeks for the children. We just don’t have the spare room. Our back room is packed to the gunnels with boxes, some of which are shelving units for the new children’s library which just need to be put together when we move. I do need some help though – please come and buy some of the sale books. There are dozens of them which need to find new homes. I do not want to have to cart boxes of sale books to the new library.
Every Monday (thanks to Bruce and Chris who close the Village Café on a Monday just so we can sell books!) we cart 33 boxes of withdrawn books out to the courtyard tables and set them up for sale. It’s a bit of a workout but that can only be a good thing for me. As you may realise I am a bit of a hoarder but it is time to do a cleanout prior to the big move, which I have been reliably told will take place sometime in November.
Of course there are many, many new books coming in. A lot of them are requests which have proved to be very good buys so please keep listening to National and reading book reviews – you are all helping me to buy good books for the library. Thanks to all the donations as well. They really help to stretch the book budget a bit more and they keep the books looking fresh and attractive.
Just out of interest the most widely read genre in the library has been crime/murder/mystery but this has changed over the last year or so and now non-fiction is pulling ahead in the popularity stakes. Maybe the writing or the subject matter has improved or it is easier to uncover research, whatever it is they are becoming popular – who knows.
However I do warn you, I have 5 Trump books and am not buying any more – I’ve had it with Trump! If non-fiction and crime fiction are not for you then how about some tried and tested authors such as George Orwell, Thomas Hardy, H G Wells, Charles Dickens or Mark Twain.
Of course, you could go with some of my favourite authors; Paulo Coelho, Dana Stabenow, Alexander McCall Smith, Jean-Paul Didierlaurent, Gregg Hurwitz and an especially interesting non-fiction NZ book about wasps (know your enemy now summer is coming).
So, rolling right on, can we give a warm welcome to Kathy who has permanently joined us in the afternoons. Victoria is now doing Book Babies on a Tuesday mornings as Richmel is tailing off her time with us as her home life gets more frenetic. I’m not letting her go without a fight though so Rich will still be with us (part-time, part-time) for some time. Well that’s my time for wittering done with for another month. Come and see us, even if you don’t want to borrow a book, it is still nice to see you and catch up.
