LIVING WITH THE CLIMATE CRISIS
Wairarapa Word presents a session with Tom Doig, editor of Living with the Climate Crisis – Voices from Aotearoa (Bridget William Books, 2020) – a timely event with the recent release of the Climate Change Commission’s recommendations to the government.
Tom Doig has authored three non-fiction books: Hazelwood (Penguin Random House, 2020), The Coal Face (Penguin, 2015) and Mörön to Mörön: Two men, two bikes, one Mongolian misadventure (Allen & Unwin, 2013). He has a PhD in Literary Journalism and teaches creative writing at Massey University, Palmerston North.
Carterton District Council is supporting this event, and environmentalist and Masterton District Councillor Chris Peterson will moderate. There will be ample time for discussion, and the book will be available for purchase.
All welcome – Sunday 7th March at 3pm, at the Carterton Events Centre. Koha entry.
The 160-page book brings together mātauranga Māori and Pasifika perspectives, voices from academia, activism, journalism and economics to bear witness to these troubled times. Contributors include Patrick Crewdson, Shaun Hendy, Ingrid Horrocks, Maia Ingoe, Suzi Kerr, Ollie Langridge, Meg Mundell, Jess Pasisi, Jacqueline Paul, Tamatha Paul, James Renwick, Aroha Spinks and Taa Ramsay Vili.
Moderator Chris Peterson, a passionate advocate of social and environmental issues, is a seven-term Masterton District Councillor. He has been a deer culler, scrub cutter and possum trapper, as well as a biology teacher, and he also established WORT, the Wairarapa Outdoor Recreation Trust, as a successful social enterprise.
Wai Word kicked off the 2020 season in February with a presentation by entomologist Phil Lester, author of “Healthy Bee, Sick Bee”. There was a lively discussion, with several beekeepers in attendance. Wai Word has been presenting afternoons with writers every month since 2012, thanks to volunteers, Koha, Almo’s Books and Creative New Zealand / Carterton Creative Communities.
