Martinborough Junior Hockey Club Mid-Winter Update

July 25, 2016 July 2016, Sports No Comments

Junior-hockey Hooray! Our new 11-aside shirts have arrived and the teams played in them for the first time last week. We have had lots of favourable comments about how smart they look on the turf. The lighter green shirt with white detail and numbers on the back, together with our white socks, makes us stand out from the other green strips – and we no longer have to wear bibs or “inside out” our shirts when we play.

A big thank you to the Trust House Foundation who generously funded $1000 towards the cost of the new shirts and to Dustys & Lulu for helping us reproduce our logo. The Club are extremely grateful for this assistance.
The winter weather continues to be favourable with no cancellations to date. The kids are all enjoying their games and practices which is what team sport is all about. All our coaches and managers dedicate many hours of their time to their teams and we want to thank them all for the fantastic job they do: Liz Larkin (who coaches two of our three 6-aside teams), Neens Bruce, Reidun Nicholson, Graeme Scarr, Trinity Shaw, Amanda Draper, Penny Kirkup, Amanda McLeod and Rebecca Cobeldick.

The 1st XI team remain unbeaten in the first round of the B-grade with a whopping 52 goals scored in total by them and only 4 goals scored against them. Wing, Emma McLeod and inner, Patrick Nicholson (both year 6s) are showing tremendous potential and have been integral in the set up and scoring of many of the team’s goals. Sadly, we are losing one of the team’s coaches, Rebecca who is moving to Blenheim next term. Her enthusiasm, organisation and skills will be missed by us all. Thank you Rebecca and we wish you all the best for the future.

We are very excited about the new turf going down at the Tennis Club and look forward to holding our first practices there. Enjoy a well-earned break over the school holidays with games on Saturday, 9 July, then resuming on Saturday, 30 July. Please contact Pippa Broom (Co-ordinator for Martinborough Hockey) on 06 306 8880 if you have any queries.
