Marty-Magic-Hockey-Team-The hockey season is drawing to a close with 6-aside games completed and only the business end of the 11-aside games left to play. Finals day is 17 September with our club prize-giving and break-up the following week.

Our Marty Magic team made it to the Gold B Grade 6-aside final on 27 August. They played St Pats Shamrocks and very narrowly lost 2-1 after leading 1-0 at halftime. The team played really well, passing nicely and with some great tackling in defence.

Their best game of the season was a 2-0 win over Kahutara in the semi-final the week before. It was a solid team effort and everyone performed to the best of their abilities. With five out of the nine players new to hockey this year, the team has come a long way in one season. Their enthusiasm for the game has always been great, and now with some skills and a years’ experience they will be ready for 11 aside next year! Well done to all of the players in the team and to their coach, Graeme Scarr.

Six of our 1st XI players trialled successfully for the Wairarapa rep teams this year: Jamie McLeod (under 13 boys A team); Patrick Nicholson (under 13 boys B team); Emma McLeod, Charlotte Jephson and Abby Green (all in the under 13 girls B team); and Delta Hutchings (under 13 girls development team). The rep tournaments are held during the next school holidays all over New Zealand at national and regional levels.

We also had some players participate in the U11 development programme which ran last term (Emma McLeod, Kate Donaldson and Lucy Boschma). This programme is fantastic for skills development and for players to experience games outside their club team.

Lastly, a big thank you to all our families, friends and supporters who have come to watch the hockey teams play each week at Clareville. Your support throughout the season is greatly appreciated. Please contact Pippa Broom (Co-ordinator for Martinborough Hockey) on 06 306 8880 if you have any queries.
