Martinborough Lions Club news

August 7, 2020 August 2020 No Comments

The club has bounced back after a period of recess during the Covid Lockdown, with a lively meeting entertained with some excellent amateur drama in early July to celebrate “handover” to the new leadership team for the year. Joe Howells has taken on President, Margaret Bush Vice President, and Stuart McGrigor is the Club Secretary. Terry Blacktop continues as Treasurer. Our oldest member Ray Lind, who is 92, is the Club Almina. The Almina checks in with members who are going through more difficult times.

What a great result the new Playground at the Waihinga Centre is turning out to be! Not only is it busy with local children after school most days, but it is becoming quite an attraction for visiting families with throngs of parents and their children seen there over the recent school holidays and weekends. Martinborough Lions donated $50,000 towards the costs of the Playground, and we are very pleased with the result.

The Martinborough Lions Club has funds available to support the youth of Martinborough undertake courses such as Outward Bound or Spirit of Adventure. Please make contact with the President who will support anyone wanting to make an application.

You may recently have seen Lions ferreting around at your gateway. We have been reading all the water meters to help the Council find water leaks and high-water usage. This is one of our fundraising activities. You can help us by making sure that your water meter is easily visible and accessible. This can save heaps of time – and means that your water meter will not miss out being read – a result that can end up with a big bill for water usage.

Martinborough Lions are keen to attract new members. Men and Woman of all ages who want to find out more are welcome to come to a few meetings to assess if this is a club that they would like to be a part of. We are a very friendly lot and whilst we undertake several community projects each year, fellowship is also an important part of the mix for us all. We meet in our Lions Den at 1 Oxford Street Martinborough from 6pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.
