Martinborough Mens Shed

October 3, 2018 October 2018 No Comments

Spring greetings from the Martinborough Mens Shed.

As many of you will know activity continues apace at the Martinborough Mens Shed with many projects underway and completed. Of note is a seat in honour of Ric Geisler, the Shed’s founding President. This was made by members and now takes pride of place in front of the Shed. We look forward to this being a meeting and conversational place.

Various conversations with people from the community have highlighted the strong interest in the ‘what and why’ of the Mens Shed. Some background:

  • The Mens shed is an international movement, having originated in Australia. See Menzshed.org.nz
  • In NZ Mens Sheds are dotted throughout the country.
  • The type of projects a shed tackle is up to each shed. Most Sheds, including ours, take on community projects such as building playgrounds for pre-school centres, repairing toy library stock, repairing and distributing old bikes to those who would struggle to get one, building planter boxes for the town and so on.
  • In addition, the Shed is a great place for blokes to learn new skills.
  • Blokes can also work on their personal projects, with the benefit of the equipment and expertise available. Also undertaking individual projects for members of the community. A recent one was rebuilding a potters’ wheel.
  • An added dimension is the introduction of social and health aspects, with informational sessions on various topics and general support.
