 Martinborough Wine and Food Society

May 9, 2022 May 2022 No Comments

The Wine and Food society of Martinborough has been operating here since the late 1980’s. We meet monthly and appreciate good food and wine. We might have a tasting one month a meal at a local restaurant another, a guest from a culinary operation or winery or bring along dishes chosen with a particular theme.

We have a cellar of wines that members buy into and there is a small fee for each meeting. At our April meeting we were lucky enough to have Christine Burki of B.wines to present six wines to us. Raphael and Christine are a Swiss couple who produce classically made cool climate wines combining the new world with the old.

The Burki’s have a special block, east of Masterton, with limestone soil and a thin overlay of clay. These rich soils produce elegant and complex pinot noir and chardonnays that were a pleasure to taste.

Other wines we tasted included the whole bunch pressed pinot gris seasoned in oak for five months with pear and stone fruit flavours. The rose’ 2021 was outstandingly pretty with strawberry and cherry flavours. It was a very pleasant evening, accompanied by cheese platters.

The Burki’s cellar door is located at the back of 45 Kitchener Street, hours Thursday to Sunday open 11am. to 4pm.

If you are interested in becoming a member of this group or would like to attend as a guest, please ring Philippa on 021-43-4163, or Dave on 027 4530 475
