Miniature art is a fast-growing hobby.
Miniatures of all kinds have experienced a pandemic bump. As the virus rages outside, hobbyists can at least flex control of their own little worlds.
Miniatures have brain-soothing properties. There is something oddly relaxing about a banal item inexplicably shrunken or in building a house you have always wanted to live in, in twelfth scale. The fascination lies in the tiny detail, the skill of the artist and the depiction of real life replicated in small scale.
Interest in dollhouse miniatures has always been strong in the northern hemisphere. In New Zealand there are around 28 miniature making clubs. Jill Fraser and Kaylene Thompson have started up a local club in Greytown. They have put their work together for an exhibition over the school holidays at the South Wairarapa Workingmen’s Club in Greytown.
The goal of attracting new interest in the hobby and new members for their club. There is a lot to see for adults and children alike. A children’s workshop will be running twice each day. There are prizes, raffles and a $250 Resene voucher to win. Entrance to the exhibition is from the carpark at the rear of the club. It will be well signed. Hours 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday, 17th and 18th July.
