Thank you to all who helped with the Book Fair!

And we squeeze in the Kirk Fair before Christmas

The First Church community is very grateful for the time, energy and commitment of everyone involved in the successful Book Fair last month. We have never before had so many books to deal with, and never before had to shift the date a number of times because of the pandemic situation we are all living with.

Our very special thanks go to Pam, Carol and the group of helpers who worked for weeks both pre fair collecting and sorting books, and with the invaluable help of Martinborough Transport undertook the immense job of shifting thousands of books to the Town Hall, setting them out and finally packing and clearing the Hall of the unsold books.

We thank all who donated books towards this event which helps us raise money for the work First Church supports and carries out in the community and elsewhere each year. This support is deeply appreciated.

The Covid virus played a significant part in several ways in running the Book Fair  this year and in addition we feel that the increased number of books along with transport and manpower difficulties mean we need to reassess how such an event might be better run in future.

However – a month later we’re at it again having taken a deep breath – determined to fit in the traditional Kirk Fair before the end of the year. This is to be held in the First Church Hall in Weld Street. There will be all the usual stalls – including the ever popular baking and produce. Look for posters round town, and pass the word “come to the fair along at the church hall” on Saturday 20th November from 10 am.

As Christmas Day falls on a Saturday this year we have been giving some thought to the best dates and times to hold Christmas services. At First Church on Friday 24th December there will be a Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols at 6.30pm.  This will be a community service open to all.

There will also be a Christmas Day morning service at First Church, again community wide, with carols and traditional Communion. It is planned to have an afternoon service in the Burnside Church on the first or second Sunday in December.  Information on Services for Christmas at First Church and Burnside will be confirmed in next month’s Star and will be advertised locally.

O God,

You know our situation-

Our health and how things are at work and in our families

Show us where to go –on- from here

Show us the way.

We don’t ask to see the end of the road

Or even all the road,

Just enough so we know in which direction to move, now.
