Power of the People
By Angela Brown
As we approach the end of 2024, Board members would like to thank the Martinborough community for your continued support and engagement.
It is truly uplifting to see what our community achieves _ often with little financial funding but
with plenty of passion.
A petition was recently organised by Leah Hawkins to ask the council to cap rates and reduce spending – together with her supporters they collected over 1,000 signatures!
It was presented to the council at the November meeting. Councillor Aidan Ellims asked to suspend Standing Orders to allow discussion around the table about the petition, this was agreed unanimously. Almost 10% of the district signed the document – it is a huge achievement and gives a very strong voice to be heard as we progress with the Long Term Plan.
The Pump Track was a long-time community led initiative – we now have a fabulous new activity for our children. Phase one has now been completed – do pop down to Considine Park and watch our children (and possibly some adults) enjoy this new fun and challenging activity. Phase two will be the plantings happening in the autumn – more to come on that in the new year.
As you all know Kitcheners Café was recently seriously damaged – in less than 48 hours it was able to open and continue trading thanks to locals working together for the community.
This demonstration of people power illustrates the high regard and love everyone has for our Kitcheners Crew.
These are just a few examples of how collectively we can achieve so much – sometimes it takes just one person to start the journey towards change. As we move into 2025 take a moment to reflect on the change you would like to see; every one of us really can make a difference.
Thank you to The Martinborough Star team who work hard throughout the year to produce this paper – if you are looking for advertising space do support this local community publication.
Finally, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and all the very best for 2025 – and if you know of anyone who may be alone during the holiday season please reach out to them, even a small gesture can have a big impact.
