School Holiday Basketball fun enjoyed by local kids.

February 9, 2021 February 2021 No Comments

Local kids had the chance to enjoy some Basketball workshops over the holidays thanks to Capital Basketball.

The court based at the Waihinga centre park is often full of kids shooting hoops and during the park upgrade Heath Kershaw had generously donated the two new hoops, but the court needed painting up to finish it off. The request was put into council and Bryce Neems got the job done and before the paint was dry we contacted Capital Basketball to explore options to get them to Martinborough.

Basketball has a huge following in New Zealand and Capital Basketball established in 2016 to support Basketball across the Wellington regions by utilising basketball as a medium and pathway for youth development.

Just before Christmas with financial support of local business Physio Spot we were able to host some taster sessions to gage interest levels for a school holiday programme.

The taster sessions were a hit and so in January we hosted 3 kiwihoops workshops covering 3 age groups, 5-7, 7-9 and 10-12 year olds.

The focus is to learn, grow and play and that is exactly what happened!

With two coaches on hand the sessions took the kids through a variety of skill building games that encouraged individual and team work.

The sessions were a success and feedback from parents has been fabulous.

So what next? well we are currently discussing options with Capital Basketball but would also love to hear if you are interested to have Basketball as a regular fixture for the kids. There is also a growing number of adults keen to play so it looks like basketball may be a thriving option for Martinborough in 2021.
