Second Martinborough Music Festival Planned for September

March 19, 2018 March 2018 No Comments

Following the successful debut of the Martinborough Music Festival last year another is planned for the last weekend of September.

The aim of this music festival is to make it the premiere chamber music festival in New Zealand attracting top drawer musicians playing in various combinations (quartets, quintets…).  One, at least, will include the Schimmel grand piano gifted to the Martinborough community by the late Cherry van Kranen. Works by composers, Mozart, Schubert and Schumann will feature in the programme. A session for children and youth is also in the mix.

Artistic Director, Vicki Jones, is excited by the calibre of the musicians. The Schimmel piano will be played by eminent New Zealand pianist, Diedre Irons. Acclaimed violinist and former Concert Master for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Wilma Smith is travelling from Sydney to be part of the Festival. Others in the line-up are Amalia Hall (violin), Mathias Balzat (cello), Mark Walton (clarinet) and Christopher Moore (viola). Fuller profiles on these players will appear in a future STAR along with the programme.

This year’s organising team is being led by Ed Allen. Ed says that with the inquiries that are coming in regarding this second Festival, prospective audience members need to diary the dates now. Booking details will follow confirmation of venues and programme.
