TENNIS: Over The Hill Tournament 2015

February 9, 2015 February 2015, Sports No Comments

Tennis--over-the-hill-tournament Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club hosted the 21st “ Over The Hill” tennis tournament over the first weekend of January. Kicking off in fine fashion on Saturday morning, all eight courts were filled by 8am, then out of the blue heavy showers of rain, which curbed play temporarily then successfully resumed and played through until early evening..

The volunteer run committee had worked hard to attract players this year and were delighted to have the largest draw in years, bringing out, 29 men’s pairs and 20 women’s pairs. Players travel from afar to enjoy the unique tournament with even international entrants making an appearance, several pairs travel regularly from Auckland and Christchurch to attend.

One couple from Australia timed their New Zealand trip to fit in, and local Zane Miltona was joined by her mother and father who were visiting from Latvia in Northern Europe. Zane and professional tennis coach Dad, Andris Detlava, were successful on Sunday’s combine draw, winning the Plate final. And other local pairing John Priest and Rachel Pickering were runners up in the Special Plate final.

Local defending men’s champion, Matt Spooner teamed up with younger brother Cory, successfully regaining the Championship title and claiming the ‘Tim Pickering’ Cup for the second year running. The Women’s championship was taken out by Mareta Randall and Kerry Noble from the Titahi Bay Club.

Other locals to claim prizes were Opaki players Brett Dimond and Chris Davidson winning the plate final, James Towers and Phil Rutene the Special Plate (Masterton Club), Special plate runners up Tim Boyer and David Shaw. The only Wairarapa Women’s pairing to be successful were Marie Miller and Sue Rutene of Masterton who were runner up in the plate.

The Over The Hill tournament is brought to the Martinborough community by Porters Pinot and Pain & Kershaw. The Martinborough Tennis Club is very grateful to the many sponsors and friends of the club who provided invaluable assistance, both financially and in kind. The annual fixture is a major fundraiser for the volunteer run club, who are about to embark on a large capital improvement schedule including resurfacing the astro turf courts and upgrading the clubhouse fittings.
