THE STAR BOOK REVIEW

“The Waiting” by Michael Connelly
I read a lot. Not as much as some, but I generally always have several books on the go at one time.
It is, of course, a part of my job, but it is also a pleasure – until it’s not and I find myself bogged down in the first third of multiple books and none of them have caught my imagination.
What to do? Abandon ship. Life is too short for unenjoyable reading.
But what to do now? It’s a bit like being hungry and even though you have checked the cupboards and the fridge at least twice, nothing appeals. You need something that will slip down easily, leaving you satisfied enough to try something more complicated.
I reach for a formulaic crime thriller. They are like the chocolate biscuits or the packet of chippies in the pantry. Dependable, delicious, a guilty pleasure.
‘The Waiting’ by Michael Connelly is my most recent choccy biscuit book. It features Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch. They are both well-known characters from previous books that are like old friends waiting to pick up where you left off last time you caught up over coffee.
There is a cold case, a hot case and the ongoing development of the character of Maddie Bosch, newly-minted LAPD officer aiming for Detective – just like her old man. The plot really doesn’t matter, you can pick up any one of Connelly’s books and read them as a stand-alone or you can follow the series.
This book, along with any of the others of its genre (Baldacci, Corban, Child etc) is a great ‘sitting in a deck chair’ read for over the summer. Reading isn’t all about Booker Prize winners – treat yourself to a guilty pleasure.
