Waihinga Centre

March 19, 2018 March 2018 No Comments

Packed to the Rafters.

The new Waihinga Centre changes daily.  Installation of the exposed rafters is rapidly progressing.  Both rafters and plywood ceiling are one of the key features of the building.

This is a key milestone. The high-level roof will be constructed first, and then the outside walls and translucent cladding added.

Working through the very hot weather of January and early February has been a challenge for the workers particularly as they have been trying to install the extra layer of framing needed to house the insulation before the roof can go on.

There have been some slight delays too, with the extreme demands the building boom in the domestic housing sector has placed on labour and material supplies.

However, as Paul Crimp states, “We are extremely grateful to the contractors who are holding their prices even as the regular prices increase, and thankful that the Construction Management Group is working hard to ensure the project stays on budget.”

Now that Cyclone Gita has vanished off the horizon, Mike Arnopp from Rigg Zschokke is keeping his fingers crossed that the weather over the next month will be sufficiently benign to enable the roof to be completed. Meanwhile work will continue in the back of house area, completing the building’s footprint.

And for the Town Hall another milestone has been reached. The final foundations for the strengthening of the Town hall are in place, so work can focus on installing the steel frame which will border the Proscenium, –  the last piece of strengthening before reinstating the interior.
