WHAREKAKA NEWS
Wharekaka has started the new decade with enthusiasm. We are in good heart and were delighted to be complimented recently for our faultless nursing care, under the leadership of Evelen Alexander. We celebrate and thank all our staff who together, as a team, provide wonderful care, activities and delicious meals for our residents with love and professionalism. We are also looking forward to welcoming volunteers into new roles in our services (see separate article).
Change is good the pundits always say, so taking that to heart, the Wharekaka Auxiliary decided to change our annual January residents’ picnic day to an outdoor Fish and Chip lunch. That went down very well, if you’ll pardon the pun, as you can see in the photo.
Residents from both the home and the villas, staff and caregivers, as well as Auxiliary members tucked into boxes of fresh fish and chips beautifully prepared by local eatery The Bach.
The weather was a little breezy but that was a welcome change after the recent heat.
The auxiliary always try to do a monthly outing or activity with our residents and after the lip smacking success of this offering I feel that Fish and Chip Day will always be “on the menu”!
Our challenge as we look to the future is how to retain our small ‘caring, country’ facility in our small town. The Board is very conscious of this challenge and is spending time this month brainstorming future scenarios and looking to develop a plan that will ensure Wharekaka continues to develop positively into the next decade and beyond. We are strongly of the view that people want to live in their home town as they age and need more care. The Board will seek the Martinborough community perspective as they progress their thinking but please contact Wharekaka if you have a view that you would like us to consider.
In recent weeks we were very saddened to farewell Lionel Parkinson, Dennis Maugham – one of our three centenarians, and Arthur Petersen.
