May 9, 2016 May 2016, Sports No Comments

Young-golfersThe 2016 Martinborough Golf Junior Open was held on Friday 22nd April. The weather was spectacular and a field of 32 players from ten clubs from the Wellington region and Manawatu enjoyed the calm conditions to post some amazing scores considering their age.

Of specific note is Darae Chung who plays at the Shandon Golf Club, she won the Girls Gross competition last year at the age of 10 and has gone back to back by winning this year with an amazing score of 74. Runner up was Mudra Lakhani (17 years) from Manawatu. Watch out Lydia the next generation is on its way!

The 19 years and under boys gross was won by Bradley Bernard (18 years) from the Paraparaumu Golf Club with a gross score of 71, with Ryan Fahey (17 years) from Shandon being runner up on 75.
The bulk of the field contested the boys 16 years and under competition with Jack Clout (16 years) from Boulcott Farm coming out on top on a gross score of 72. George Barralet from Manor Park, also 16 years old was runner up on 73.
The competition was once again sponsored by Jeff Barber and Property Brokers, great supporters of local golf, without which the club could not host this great opportunity for young golfers.

Next year will see an expansion of the competition to include the opportunity for more kids to be involved through a 9 hole competition../

Martinborough Golf Club is happy to welcome new young golfers, contact the club for more information.
