Medical demand lifts emergency call-outs

September 12, 2023 Regular Features, September 2023 No Comments

Chief Fire Officer Jake Hawkins

Another month rolls around and we are rapidly closing in on our call numbers total for last year, this week clocking up our 200th call this year.

This is mainly due to the huge demand for our Medical First Response team's skills, and we know we have made lifesaving interventions.

You are starting to see our new Responders out on calls and having them on board is fantastic. Remember our turnouts to these Medical calls don’t activate the siren unless critical so you don’t always hear us out and about.

A special thanks to the Medici Quiz night for their support which has allowed the purchase of a Burns Gel kit for treatment of burns once cooled, leading to better pain management and healing.

We have had several Fire responses lately, and quick thinking action by Brigade members has stopped fire spread along with preventing substantial property damage.

On the achievement front, our DCFO Lisa Ireland, recently selected to represent the Fire & Emergency New Zealand in their New Zealand National Golf Team playing against the Australians – big shout out to Lisa for her part in being successful for the Winning New Zealand Team.

Time to put a note in your calendar!

Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade Open Day is on Saturday 28 October. Lots of displays, Appliances and fun for everyone – Flint and Amber will be there for the kids too! -If you are interested you can talk to us about joining as a Firefighter or Medical Responder.

Earlier this month you might have seen, Fire & Emergency partnering with TVNZ’s Seven Sharp to showcase the devastation a fire can cause in the home.

The controlled live house burn was a great opportunity to bring to life the dangers of incorrectly charging lithium-ion battery products, how fast fire can spread, and the importance of escape plans and interconnected smoke alarms.

Remember these batteries can be a danger if not used and charged correctly. Remember if you smell smoke in your house or see smoke coming from a house then Dial 111 immediately, then get out and STAY out.

If you have any queries about assistance or response please don't hesitate to contact me directly – CFO Jake Hawkins – 0272-559-440.
