New golf clubhouse build, fund-raising up and running

April 5, 2024 April 2024, Sports No Comments

Martinborough golf’s new clubhouse build is well under way _ as are fundraising efforts.

It doesn’t seem long since we watched the demolition of the old clubhouse and now the frames for half the new building are in place with scaffolding up ready for the roof timbers.

Everything is going to plan – let’s keep fingers crossed for a dryish autumn so that the building can be watertight ready for winter.

Project manager John Thompson said while things are going well there are always a few hitches along the way, like finding an old septic tank which must have been buried for more than 50 years!

Fundraising is the main focus of the club currently with members putting hands in pockets to help as well as a number of funding applications in progress _ including one to the Pain Estate. Given the multi use of the facility for meetings, functions and as a civil defence community hub it is hoped that funders will look favourably on the applications.

More will be needed though and a number of events are planned.

The first is an ambrose competition on Friday 19 April where teams of four battle for some spectacular prizes such as $500 for nearest the pin on one of the holes.

A mega auction will be held following the golf and prizes and auction items have been donated so all proceeds will go to the building fund. A big thank you to all donors. If you would like to enter please contact the office (entries@martinboroughgolf.co.nz). Teams will be limited so get in quick.

As winter approaches and we look for inside events three quiz nights will be held in mid May,

June and July. There will be nightly prizes and, in addition, each team of up to six will have the opportunity to win the overall series prize – not based on how clever you are! Just turn up for all three nights and your chances to win increase. Look out for posters in the usual spots around Martinborough and on the Facebook page and website.

On the golf front, congratulations to Anna Possenniskie who has been selected in the Wellington team to compete in the Women’s National Interprovincial Championships. Anna is also team captain!

The mens’ interclub teams have been going well with Division 2 sitting on top of the table.

Division 10 are 3rd on the table but with a couple of home games to come the team is determined to make up lost ground. The ladies’ Lansdowne Trophy team is only 2.5 points behind the team currently in first  place.
