NEWS FROM WHAREKAKA

November 11, 2019 November 2019 No Comments

New manager

We welcome our new manager, Jenny Prentice, who joined Wharekaka in mid October. Jenny has worked in health care management and clinical roles for over 30 years including five years as the manager of a residential care home in Lower Hutt. She is a Martinborough resident who is looking forward to being able to walk to work and getting to know Wharekaka residents, families, staff and the wider community.

Resident news

Residents have been making good use of the van with picnics and a drive to Lake Ferry. The tri-cycle has been taken out in the sunshine with Joyce and Thelma enjoying being driven by Stu from Green Jersey Cycles. Wharekaka is very grateful to the ‘Cycling without Age Support Group’ for their help in making these outings possible.

We are also enjoying our musical entertainment from Bill Young, Paul Mason, Pauline Craig and Jinx.

A Big Shout Out from Wharekaka for help with two huge projects

  • Emergency Preparedness

Wharekaka has installed a large water tank and emergency generator so as to be able to provide ongoing services to its residents and other frail and elderly Martinborough people during an emergency – earthquakes, flooding, major power outage. This is a big expensive project, led by Trust Board member Andy Sutherland and has only been possible through the generous support (financial and practical) of: The Sutherland Self Help Trust, Martinborough Medical Centre, Mark Taylor of Hawkins and Taylor, Cotter and Stevens

  • Site Clearance for the new Villas

The villas, designed by Victoria Read (Aspect Architecture), are being built by A1 Homes. Before building could begin, the site had to be cleared. For help with this, we are very grateful to; Graham Peek and Martinborough Men’s Shed who gave their time freely. Both these projects increase the facilities and resilience of our community to meet the needs of our older people. They would not be possible without the willing assistance of so many of our community, only some of whom we are able to name here.

Thank you ALL
