Public lecture on the geological origins of the Aorangi Mountains

October 15, 2020 October 2020 No Comments

The Aorangi Mountains to the south of Martinborough have an interesting history including periods of volcanic activity and being above sea level for much longer than most of the rest of New Zealand.

Victoria University Geologist James Crampton, who has an interest in the Aorangi Range, is giving a Public Lecture in Martinborough about the geological history of the Aorangi Mountains on Sunday November the 1st.

The talk will be at the Lions Hall 1 Oxford Street Martinborough starting at 6pm and will include the option of buying drinks and snacks. The entry fee will be a voluntary donation to the Aorangi Restoration Trust. The Aorangi Restoration Trust is a charitable conservation trust with the vision of restoring the biodiversity of the Aorangi Ranges and surrounding areas. The Trust supports predator control work and reforestation activity in the Aorangi Forest Park and adjacent areas.

If interest is sufficient, there may be a series of talks on the Aorangi Mountains, focusing on the Maori history, flora/fauna and archaeology of the ranges, and also potentially also a field trip.
