WAIRARAPA U3A TURNS FOUR!

April 7, 2014 April 2014 No Comments

Most readers will read the headline and say ‘U3A – what’s that??’ It does sound like a secret society, but it’s not.

The ‘University of the Third Age’ had its beginnings in France nearly fifty years ago and now has many members world-wide. It’s a University in the original sense which means a sort of ‘club’ of like minded people who like learning stuff or getting together for activities they enjoy sharing.

The Third Age bit loosely implies membership for the ‘not so young’ – although the Wairarapa members are all young at heart still!

Locally the structure of the organisation that works best for members is having small groups which meet mostly monthly [some weekly]. This year there are sixteen of these; ranging from the serious such as Philosophy to the studious like learning Italian or French, to the easy-going get-togethers over coffee or a meal while purportedly discussing “Current Affairs.”

Martinborough has two groups this year – one a Book Group and the other a monthly coffee morning where discussion on almost every issue – ranging from world issues to somethings hilarious – ensues.
The fourth birthday was celebrated at the AGM at the end of March. Membership is nearly 100 – numbers, not age! Almost without exception, members say the best bit is the friendship and communication which follow naturally from going to one or more groups.

Much latest research on ageing indicates this is so worthwhile for keeping good health and a sound mind; so a bonus for members.
