FROM THE MAYOR

The central government election delivered a result that no one seemed to have predicted.  There had been all sorts of speculation about the outcome for Wairarapa as well.  Some commentators had been picking Labour to win as the right wing vote would be split between National and New Zealand First.

The outcome of course was very different with NZ First mostly decimating Labour support although National’s majority was whittled back a little.

What this election did deliver for Wairarapa though was the possibility (special votes not counted at time of writing) of three MPs working for us in parliament.    Alastair Scott, Ron Mark and Marama Fox will make a formidable team to look after our interests.  Having two list MPs will also ensure our electorate representative listens to the voice of the people not just his party.

It can’t go unnoticed that when you tally all the votes, more people didn’t support the National candidate than did.  It’s an indication of the size and very diverse nature of our electorate.
Wairarapa should however consider itself lucky.  Three very different people with distinct ideologies making sure our voice is heard should make for an interesting next three years in parliament.
