A Healthy and Happy 2016

February 9, 2016 February 2016, Regular Features No Comments

When it comes to health, there is a huge amount of information out there informing us that if we just “eat this miracle food”, “do 100 sit-ups every day” or “purchase this expensive magic elixir” we too can experience great health and vitality.

As it turns out though, it is not just one food or meal that nourishes us, or one walk which makes us fit, it is about what we do in combination everyday that really makes a difference for the long term. Great health results from what we eat, how we move and think, along with periods of rest and rejuvenation.

Seems simple doesn’t it? Apparently not when we look at the statistics of chronic lifestyle disease and the high rates of stress in our workplaces and communities. Both are increasing exponentially in the developed world.

Focusing on health in a proactive, positive and sustainable way is one of the best investments you can make. “The greatest wealth is health” Virgil.

So how do we work towards increased health and wellbeing? Focus on eating a well balanced diet with plenty of variety, and concentrate on eating lots of plant based, unprocessed foods. Embrace variety for both eating and activity, life isn’t meant to be boring! Keep active by choosing activities you enjoy so that exercising isn’t a chore but a motivating time out for you.

Practice positive self-talk and work towards building a resilient mindset, life will throw you curveballs but choosing to react in a helpful way will put you in good stead to cope with setbacks. Connecting with others, smiling often and expressing gratitude has shown to be beneficial for our health too, so nab some time with family and friends, show your pearly whites and be grateful for the little things every day.
