First sight
Māori may have been the first humans to lay eyes on Antarctic waters and potentially the continent itself. Māori and Pasifika journeys to the Antarctic may date back to the seventh century say researchers from Ngāi Tahu and Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, who reviewed oral histories and published literature .
More research may lead to greater incorporation of Māori perspectives into protection and management of Antarctica.
